Un par de aspiraciones

Perdóname
Pero a pesar de todo
Tengo
Todavía
Un par
De aspiraciones.

Aspiro
Por ejemplo
A ser presidente
De mi mismo,
Electo
Mediante el sufragio
De mis mejores sueños.

Aspiro,
Al fin,
A vivir
Mis días
En el santuario
Del amor de mi mujer,
En el refugio de sus besos
A prueba del mundo.

Tengo la loca aspiración
De construir una casa
Para todos,
Para mis hijos y los hijos
De mis hijos,
Para los amigos
Y los amigos de los amigos,
Y hasta para los enemigos.
Una casa llena de luz
Abierta
Al mundo.

Quiero redescubrir

Y caricias
Para cosechar de noche,
En secreto,
Girasoles contra toda maldad.

Aspiro
Al egoísmo puro
De los domingos por la mañana
Al disparate de escribir un poema
Que salvará al mundo
O al menos,
Algún día.
A uno de mis nietos.

Imbécil que soy,
Todavía
Aspiro a nacer
Diario y nocturno
Y a morir bien,
Tantas veces

Field of vision

Yes it is a field

Yes your eye
Puts before you
A rolling hill

Yes it is excellent today
The way
Impossible numbers of
Wildflowers
And birds
Compel you
To look
And to see them

Yes they
Take over
And move
Your eyes
For you

Yes you look for
The stone wall
And there it is
Deep in shadows

Something
Tells you
Yes you will not fall
To your death
Into the field
Of vision

Lyric at 30,000 feet

                                                      -- For Saudamini

Each moment
Even the darkest
Hovers like a hologram
Before you

Circle slowly around its
Dazzle and sizzle
O befuddled one

Take its light
Its heat
In your hand
Like a candle

Put its sweetness
On your tongue
Like a lozenge

Dance with its beauty
Like a tireless lover

Give away its abundance
Like loaves fresh from the oven

Follow it
Like a school of glowing fishes
With a single mind

Sam wants to be my friend

Sam who was born
At least once

Sam who
Is 4% Neanderthal

Sam who is pulsing like a firefly
In the buzzing evening

Sam who is happy like a worm in an apricot
Sam with a single love song like a finch

Sam who almost died and said
Fuck death
Like Leon Golub

Sam who is steeling and melting himself
Sam who is up and down to monkey business
Honey in his right ear
Shit in his left
A particle and a wave
Sam who inhabits svaha, the space between lightning and thunder
Sam who is rolling out dough on the powdered marble slab of his young life
Sam spiraling on a thermal

Sam wants to be
My friend
In the crime scene of the world!

For Paul and Helene

I just wanted to leave you

With a little music

Helpless
Songs
To help you
Start over

I wanted to
Fill your brains with zeros

Your lungs
With laughter

A death

                                                                    -- For Ruth

Then the favorite dress is empty forever.
A flower on a blouse withers in a bureau;
Scarves lose her scent and gain another.
The Persian-lamb coat settles with a sigh
On a black hanger.
A mysterious whorl appears on her mirror.
Oh, a piece of dust with hair to show you
Turns up later!

You are appalled, tears flash in your eyes,
And your heart, knowing nothing,
Walks over and yells at a pleasant photograph.

The path

All about me are things trodden upon.
I stamp a path in the grass myself.
How many insects am I killing?
One pale one? One harmful?
Did I hear a snake sigh?

Two meadows down,
A blue-jay in a pine.
A dog barks twice,
Moving behind me.
In the porch in a quiet chair,
Or in the grass going,
A double life…

Listen! A train whistle for the left ear.

On the path,
A witness,
A smoke,
An amorous wing
For the eye.

Monody

Mother mine, I have washed down
The turtles, your precious stones,
Smoked, touched dirt, painted Toby brown.
I have ignored the door and answered no phones.

I have had a filthy mind, destroyed my trains,
Seized Howard.  I threw wet paper from the window,
Ruined your bedspread with stains
From Howard.  I opened your letters and know

Everything. I did not eat.
I have burned my hand, burned Toby, told lies, have stolen
Something from your desk, lost your keys,
And danced in the piano.  Ah, I made my eye swollen.

Mother, I heaved up on the glasses, ran
In the Green Room, scuffed the floor.
I ran frankfurters through the fan.
Oh, haven’t I gone and spit, waged war?

Song for my first child, Noah

This hole’s not made of wool
Nor fine linen fibers –
It’s the center of a spool
Or the space between two tigers.

What happens in this hole
Happens when you sigh,
Happens in an empty bowl
And in a windless sky.

I have ten between my toes
And seven in my head,
And two called open windows
Across from my bed.

This mixture of edges
Can only be found
When some color wedges
All the way round.

This hole's not made of wool
Nor fine linen fibers --
It’s the center of a spool
Or the space between two tigers.
